Upcoming Events: Boston OpenGL Class And Voices That Matter Conference / Special Offer

Gaming industry veteran and iPhone indie game developer Noel Llopis will be in Boston teaching his OpenGL iPhone Programming Training Class and speaking at the Voices That Matter iPhone Developer Conference in back to back sessions in October.

Read on for details about Noel, the class, the conference and the discounts.

To avoid burying the headline, I’ll briefly mention the discount upfront: when you add up the discounts for attending both and registering early you, in effect, get to attend the conference for free. See the last section of this post for specifics.

About Noel

Well known iPhone dev guru Jeff LaMarche, said of Noel:

You’d be hard pressed to find someone who understands the mathematics of 3D graphics or how to use that knowledge to create great iPhone games better than Noel.

He created the Flower Garden app, and his console and PC game titles include The Bourne Conspiracy, Darkwatch, MechAssault 2, MechAssault, Battleship: Surface Thunder and Missile Command.

He writes a monthly column for Game Developer Magazine. His book, C++ For Game Programmers, rates 4.5/5 at Amazon. His blog, Games From Within, turns up second (after Wikipedia) when searching for game programmer on Google!

About The Class

Spend Oct 15-16 — the two days ahead of the conference — learning how to create high-performance, 2D and 3D OpenGL applications on the iPhone. This class is specifically designed for Objective-C, Cocoa and Cocoa-Touch/UIKit programmers and emphasizes practical knowledge and working code.

You’ll write OpenGL apps showing 2D and 3D object rendering, animation, lighting, multitexturing, and point sprites. You complete the class with a solid basis in OpenGL that will allow you to learn more advanced topics on your own from the documentation and browsing the API.

About The Conference

The Voices That Matter iPhone Developers Conference (Oct 17-18) is pitched as a conference for Mac developers who want to work on the iPhone.

Looking at the line up, though, I think I’d broaden that description. The conference wants you to know Objective-C; with some cramming ahead of time I’d bet you’d do fine, particularly given who’s speaking:

I (indirectly) learned to program for the iPhone by reading Aaron Hillegass’ Cocoa Programming for Mac OS X. He’s speaking, as is Erica Sadun, Daniel Jalkut, Marcus Zarra and Fraser Speirs.

In addition to Noel, speakers who’ve contributed to Mobile Orchard include Bill Dudney (Map Kit Podcast) and Peter Bakhyryev (Tutorial: Networking and Bonjour on iPhone).

Discounts

The conference and the class both offer discounts to people who attend both:

The class is $1500 $1299 during the early registration period. Conference attendees save another $300, reducing the price to $999. Register with the “voices” discount code.

The conference is $695 $495 during the early registration period. After you register for the class, we’ll send you a discount code worth a further $150 off the conf, knocking the early bird price down to $345.

In short, by registering early and taking advantage of both discounts you’ll get to attend the class and the conference for less than the regular price of the class!
