9to5Mac is reporting they’ve received a tip that Apple is developing an FM Radio app for the iPhone and iPod touch that will have background multi-tasking (like Apple’s Phone and iPod apps), and may be able to pause live programming like the new iPod nano radio feature.

It will either be provided as a stand alone app, or integrated into the iPod app, but it’s still a work in progress:

The holdup on this app is that Apple is trying to integrate the Mobile iTunes Store purchases into the functionality of the program. For instance, if you like a song you are listening to on the radio (and that station supports tagging and you are in the US), you will be able to push a button and see the song (and all of the information around it) in the iTunes Mobile store. With another click, you’ll be able to make a purchase. This is an extension of the Song Tagging feature used in the iPod Nanos. Perhaps they could even add some Shazam technology to help with those stations that don’t support tagging.

9to5Mac further claims that existing iPhones and iPod touches have been technically able, though not yet enabled, to receive FM Radio for a while now, and that the iPhone 3GS and iPod touch G3 can even broadcast FM Radio as part of the Nike+.

While rumors of FM Radio functionality, and radio tagging surfaced before the iPhone 3GS shipped, and the chipsets may have such technology as part of their overall package, it’s unknown how easily Apple could “flip the switch” on full FM Radio — the way they did for Bluetooth Stereo A2DP on the iPod touch G2.

Still, given the iPod nano’s radio feature, and under the cliche of better late than never, if Apple does indeed add Radio.app or just build in a Radio tab to iPod.app, were’ sure some users would be happy. Right?

This step-by-step guide and tutorial will show you how to jailbreak your iPhone 3G or 3GS OS 3.1.2 using PwnageTool 3.1.4 for Mac OS X. PwnageTool is a Mac and Mac only tool. There is no equivalent for Windows and no one knows yet when such a tool for Windows will be released.

If you updated your iPhone via iTunes to 3.1.2 or if you bought your iPhone with 3.1.2 pre-installed, you will be able to jailbreak it, however, you will not be able to unlock it. On the other hand. if you are still on 3.0 or if you have updated to 3.1 using PwnageTool, you preserved your baseband and you will be able to unlock using UltraSn0w.

This tutorial is written for both the iPhone 3G and 3GS. The steps are identical. The only thing that changes is the file you have to download in order to create your custom IPSW.

The Dev-Team has released a jailbreak for firmware 3.1.2. The jailbreak (PwnageTool 3.1.4) works for the iPhone 2G, 3G and 3GS. It also work on the 1G and 2G iPod touch. It does not support the 3G iPod touch at this time. PwnageTool only works on a Mac (no Windows version yet).

If you are an unlocker, “It is super important that people who need the unlock to understand they can keep it only by starting at 3.0 (or earlier) and updating solely to custom IPSWs that don’t update the baseband. For those who have been onboard the “unlock train”, simply install ultrasn0w via Cydia once you’ve restored to your custom IPSW. Don’t forget to turn off the “3G” setting in Settings->General->Network if you use T-Mobile in the U.S.A.”

Below is a snippet from the Dev-Team’s website. However, you will want to check out their blog for full information and the download.

Be sure to read everything carefully before you begin your jailbreak.

Pwnage Pie

Here are some details on our latest version of PwnageTool 3.1.4 for Mac OS X which supports the 3.1.2 release of the iPhone software for iPhone 2G/3G/3GS and iPod Touch 1G/2G.

If you’re already jailbroken (by whatever means), you don’t need to mess around with DFU mode at all. Just create (or get from a friend) your custom IPSW and Option-Restore (Shift-Restore on Windows) to it via iTunes. Don’t enter DFU mode at all. Please make sure you are restoring to the custom IPSW, not the stock one from Apple! For best results, use the latest iTunes (9.0.1) — which includes a nice new application organizer.

This release allows your baseband to remain unlocked at 3.1.2, but it does not unlock a new baseband put there by restoring to official 3.1.x. It is super important that people who need the unlock to understand they can keep it only by starting at 3.0 (or earlier) and updating solely to custom IPSWs that don’t update the baseband. For those who have been onboard the “unlock train”, simply install ultrasn0w via Cydia once you’ve restored to your custom IPSW. Don’t forget to turn off the “3G” setting in Settings->General->Network if you use T-Mobile in the U.S.A.

Note for 3GS users not already jailbroken and stuck at 3.1.x: this version of PwnageTool has a side feature to jailbreak your 3GS. It uses a simple implementation of the usb control msg hole found by chronicdev, geohot, and our very own gray. Now that the hole is public and in use, we expect Apple to close it by the next major firmware update. That’s why 3GS users need to get their ECID hashes for 3.1.x now, and need to stay onboard the “jailbreak train” in all future updates. For more details on what this means, please see our earlier posts or ask in our comments section (moderated by the always helpful @angie and @confucious!).

For the early adopters who ran blackra1n and are having problems with mobilesubstrate, winterboard, diskaid, or ifunbox, you can install a custom .ipsw from PwnageTool to fix these issues. That’s because all jailbroken devices accept a custom .ipsw created by PwnageTool. (However, if you ran blackra1n on a 3G or 3GS that means you updated to stock 3.1.x, and the carrier unlock is now out of reach. We’ll continue to work on a carrier unlock for the latest basebands, but the timeframe for such an unlock is unknowable.)

Note: If you use internet tethering on a carrier that doesn’t officially support it, you’ll lose it by going to 3.1.x. Stay back at 3.0 until a hack for that is developed.

SUMMARY:

    * The iPhone 3GS is now supported out of the box in PwnageTool 3.1.4 (or if you have upgraded to 3.1.x in iTunes)
* The iPod 2G is still supported in PwnageTool 3.1.4 but you must already be jailbroken (we’ll update this if there’s a big demand from non-jailbroken ipt2G owners)
* The iPod touch 3G is NOT supported

DETAILS:

   1. GOLDEN RULE: If you are using a iPhone 3G or iPhone 3G(S) with ultrasn0w and rely on ultrasn0w to obtain cellular service then you should only update your device with an .ipsw that is made with the new PwnageTool. There are no second chances with this. You need to remember that PwnageTool will provide an upgrade path to newer versions of the iPhone software in the future.
2. Please read all parts of this post before downloading and using these tools.
3. Read items 1, 2 and 3 again and again.
4. At the bottom of this post are the bittorrent files for the 3.1.4 capable version of PwnageTool.
5. PwnageTool will work for the iPhone 3GS
6. PwnageTool will work for the iPod touch 2G
7. PwnageTool WILL work for Original iPhone (1st Generation), the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3G(S) and the iPod touch (1st Generation and 2nd Generation) but NOT the iPod touch 3rd generation.
8. For 3G and 3G(S) users who are Pwned, PwnageTool is your key to updating in the future, just remember to never install an update directly from Apple, always use an .ipsw that has been created with PwnageTool.
9. There is no Windows version of PwnageTool it is a Mac OS X tool only, we are not developing a Windows version of PwnageTool.

Late last night, the Dev Team released PwnageTool 3.1.4 jailbreak for Mac OS X. This updated version of PwnageTool now supports the iPhone and iPod Touch OS 3.1.2. PwnageTool 3.1.4 for OS 3.1.2 comes just a couple days after BlackRa1n, a tool labeled as the “easiest and fastest jailbreak ever”, which doesn’t come without its share of issues.

What can PwnageTool for OS 3.1.2 do for you?

PwnageTool supports the iPhone 3GS OTB. If you recently bought your iPhone with 3.1.2 or if you updated via iTunes, you will now be able to jailbreak your iPhone

PwnageTool will not update your baseband, so if you want to unlock, you have to use PwnageTool. In contrast, BlackRa1n will update your baseband

If you jailbroke your iPhone using BlackRa1n, you may install a custom IPSW cooked with PwnageTool (this will fix many issues you may have with BlackRa1n)

Updating to a custom 3.1.2 IPSW will kill the tethering hack. If you need tethering, do not update

You can jailbreak your iPod Touch 2G only if it was jailbroken before

PwnageTool doesn’t support the iPod Touch 3G yet

PwnageTool is Mac only but you can use a custom firmware cooked with PwnageTool on a windows machine (just make sure you can trust the source)

There is no ETA for a Windows tool

There is no ETA for a software unlock for the latest baseband

PwnageTool 3.1.4 is available for download from our downloads section.

I will write PwnageTool jailbreak tutorials within the next few hours. For the latest jailbreak info, please visit our jailbreak page.

The Dev Team has just released PwnageTool 3.1.4 for Mac OS X. This release supports the 3.1.2 iPhone software for the following devices: iPhone 2G/3G/3GS and iPod Touch 1G/2G.

The iPhone 3GS is now supported out of the box in PwnageTool 3.1.4 (or if you have upgraded to 3.1.x in iTunes)

The iPod 2G is still supported in PwnageTool 3.1.4 but you must already be jailbroken (we’ll update this if there’s a big demand from non-jailbroken ipt2G owners)

The iPod touch 3G is NOT supported

If you’ve Unlocked your iPhone under 3.0, and want to maintain your unlock, it’s vital to remember:

This release allows your baseband to remain unlocked at 3.1.2, but it does not unlock a new baseband put there by restoring to official 3.1.x. It is super important that people who need the unlock to understand they can keep it only by starting at 3.0 (or earlier) and updating solely to custom IPSWs that don’t update the baseband.

If you used some other method, including blackra1n that involved upgrading to Apple’s 3.1.2, your baseband has also been updated and there’s no unlock until (if?) someone figures it out, and the Dev Team has no time table for that.

For the full details please visit the Dev Teams blog and read carefully as TiPb is not responsible for your jailbreak outcome, good or bad.

We are starting to see multitasking capabilities appear in other smart phones such as the new Palm Pre and I’m sure it’s only a matter of time before we see this feature come to a future revision of the iPhone OS. The video below details the use of cover flow while application are in use.

“Our idea is to present the running apps together with the rest of your app icons on the home screen, instead of hiding them behind long pressing some unrelated key. All running apps have a miniature representation in a cover flow at the bottom of the screen. To make room for this, each home screen page will have one less row of icons and the dock is removed completely. But since the running apps often will equal your favourites, they will still be easily accessible.

There are just some programs where the mouse is a necessary object and kludgy finger pointing just won’t get the job done. Photoshop is one of those apps.

However, that hasn’t stopped Adobe from releasing a Photoshop app for the iPhone. OK, let me back up. They haven’t actually released a version of Photoshop as you and I know it for the iPhone, but rather a “Mobile” version that interactions with Photoshop.com to allow you to edit your photos in rudimentary way’s before you upload then to the interwebs.

You can find out a bit more on Adobe’s Blog where they announced the mobile app, or at Photoshop.com

Pssst… I got a hot tip on tonight’s Monday Night Football game… it’s gonna be an UPSET! Miami’s gonna win!

Well on second thought, this is a pretty bad example since the NY Jets are only favored by 1 point which basically makes this game a tossup. Even iBetFootball PRO will tell you “DO NOT BET!!!” this game because it’s just too close to predict. What it does recommend, however, is that you take the Over which is 36 because iBetFootball is predicting the final score to total 39. Still pretty close, but hey it’s called gambling for a reason, right?

iBetFootball makes its predictions based on past game data, so in theory it should become more accurate as the football season goes on. How accurate was it this past weekend, you ask? Well, let’s see…

Here’s what iBetFootball predicted would happen yesterday vs. what actually happened yesterday. Note that “Recommendation accurate?” assumes that you’re obeying the app’s suggestions.

Baltimore favored by 9 over Cincinnati
iBF’s recommendation: OK BET: Take Indy -3.5
Actual result: Indianapolis 31, Tennessee 9
Correct winner predicted? Yes
Recommendation accurate? Yes

So here’s the breakdown correctness for one Sunday with iBetFootball Pro:

OK Bet: 1 of 3
Best Bet: 3 of 3
Best Bet+: 1 of 1

Total bet recommendation record: 5 of 7

Winners predicted (straight up): 8 of 13

Over/Under predicted: 8 of 13 (sorry, not shown above cuz I’m lazy)

I’m impressed by those Best Bets! Now, it’s impossible to expect any iPhone app to be right 100% of the time and there will be weeks when there are massive upsets galore, ie: Seattle totally spanking Jacksonville, but if yesterday’s games are any indication of how well this app can do then I’m pretty much sold. I’m especially impressed that it correctly chose Detroit as a Best Bet against Pittsburgh… I’ll bet a lot of football know-it-alls in Vegas very smugly assumed the Steelers would kick the Lions in the balls and then take their lunch money, but that clearly didn’t happen.

Notice that there’s a difference between Best Bet and Best Bet+. Only one game yesterday was designated as “+” and it was another game that a lot of people probably had the wrong gut feeling on. Even I thought New England would be able to win that game by at least a touchdown! Shows how much I know.

As an app, iBetFootball is kind of rough around the edges and not much to look at, but if you’re using an app like this all you should care about is results. Will it do this well every week for the rest of the season? It’s impossible to say, so I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

One thing to be aware of is that there are three versions of this app but iBetFootball PRO is the only one that does all the statistical legwork for you! The non-pro version ($2.99) lets you input game data yourself, but if you’re going to get this app just spend the extra $3 for pro… unless you really enjoy inputting game stats for 14 games a week! Ugh. No thanks.

If you’re big into gambling on NFL games, I’d definitely recommend this app but I’d also suggest giving it some small tests first. Before you go and wager your kid’s college fund on all the Best Bets, try betting small for a couple of weeks and see how you do. I’d hate for anyone to get their ass kicked in the sportsbook and start screaming f***ing IAR and that stupid betting app! Use this app, but also use your head, and hopefully you’ll have a fun and profitable football season!

Roadkill Cafe is on sale for *free*! Normal price is $.99 – $1.99

I confess that I’ve only spent about 15 minutes playing this game, but I’m gonna go out on a limb here and say drop what you’re doing and get Roadkill Cafe right now while it’s still free!

It’s funny, it’s gross, it’s well produced, and on top of all that it’s four games in one. The main game has you driving around an odd looking roadkill-scooping-vehicle, and you need to pick up all the dead animals that are constantly getting smushed in traffic so you can deliver them to the cafe where hungry customers are waiting!

In Survivor mode you simply have to dodge traffic for as long as possible, Vengeance is very similar but instead you’re dodging chickens, and in Rampage you’re driving along a Spy Hunter-ish highway where you have to mow down as much roadkill as you can while also avoiding collisions with other cars.

Roadkill Cafe respects the iPod, has global high score boards, and comes with three different control schemes (choosing one is a game in itself) and even if you miss out on this sale I’d say go for it if you’re in the mood for something new! I don’t think there are hours and hours of gameplay here, but it’s still a very good game for just a buck or two.

The game takes place in a world where friendly dragons roam the skies. However, a dark magic has befallen the realm which has bound the dragons to the earth. Ingame you represent Mila, a simple girl who discovers she is a descendant of the mythical Dragon Sentinel and the only one who can restore the freedom of the dragons and solve the magical mystery. To save them you must match colored orbs before time runs out (yes, this is a timed game) and the dragons crash to earth. An ingenious feature here is the fact that the gameboard is itself the dragons and all the matching goes on within them as they quickly drop from the sky. The whole thing is wonderfully drawn and animated and definitely eye candy. Anyway if you can match enough orbs you save them, otherwise they crash to earth and you have to try, try again. Helping your cause are powerups, gained periodically as you progress. Somewhat unique is how the powerups are used. Basically there are 15 total and divided into 3 types: destructive, creative and passive. You can select 1 from each category (or none if you’re hardcore) then as you play, any time you create a chain of at least 3 matches in 1 move, one of those powerups is chosen randomly and appears somewhere onscreen. A simple touch activates it and they range from the standard (lightning bolt, fireball) to the nifty like being able to ‘paint’ orbs the same color for some strategic matching. You can also stockpile powerups onscreen for later use.

In the main story mode your progress through each level is charted through an attractive scrollable map; about 70 levels in total. You can also replay any level you as you go and why would you wanna do that you say? Each level ends up with a star-rating out of 5 plus there’s an ‘outro’ sequence at the end of each level where you can gain bonus points. The better you play the more stars and higher bonus you can achieve. This is a nice touch as it gives players a decent reason to replay levels for that ‘perfect game’. Periodically you’ll be presented with an optional minigame where you can get even more bonus points along with some insightful tips by taking pictures of dragons for a research doctor. The minigame is a decent diversion but absolutely non-critical to the story so it’s really cool that the game allows you to skip it if you so desire.

Quick word about the production values in this game: splendid. The sound (with one teeny exception), music, graphics and overall level of polish are simply outstanding. Neat little nuances abound like the blinking eyes of the dragons or the satisfying splash screen when you garner an achievement. You cannot possibly be dissatisfied with audio/visual elements presented here.

In addition to the main story mode there are 2 other modes. I mention them here for completeness but to be honest after checking them out a few times each for the review the only one I will consider playing is Islands and even then only very rarely as both modes have the tendency to burn you out on the play mechanic in a hurry.

Survival – here you pick a single powerup and try to keep the dragons aloft as long as possible though you’re allowed to lose 2 along the way.

Islands – this is survival but ALL powerups are available and randomized (you can still sacrifice 2 dragons).

Just a few items for the props and flops section so here goes.

sound and music volume sliders are extremely wonky so it’s exceedingly difficult to get your selections to ‘take’

minor gripe but the sound effect used when an orb hits another orb or the edge of the screen just sounds like a ping pong ball hitting a paddle; after spending a long time playing this game I’m still not used to it and it just seems out of place

no screen flip support

no iTunes music support

bug, the pause feature does not work on Islands mode, the pause screen comes up but the game plays on behind it (pause works fine elsewhere).

This game is basically very, very good and it’s obvious why the developers feel safe charging what might seem a high price by app store standards. After spending many hours with this game it’s definitely worth it as it’s a fun diversion you can come back to again and again when you want a quick challenge. The timed nature will probably turn off anyone looking for a laid-back, plan every move type of game but personally I found the challenge level to be just about right with any particular level never needing more than a few replays to win. Highly recommended!
